Although the surgical removal of pulmonary hydatid cysts is considered a routine procedure frequently performed at Al-Kafeel Super Specialty Hospital, every case presents its own unique medical and humanitarian challenge.

Dr. Hasanein Al-Mousawi, a specialist in cardiac and thoracic surgery, recounted the case of a 14-year-old boy who was admitted with a very large hydatid cyst in the right lung. The cyst had caused severe shortness of breath and persistent chest pain, preventing the child from living his daily life normally.

Dr. Al-Mousawi explained that what made the case particularly complex and unusual was the presence of severe adhesions between the lung, heart, and diaphragm, in addition to significant damage to a large portion of the lung tissue caused by prolonged pressure from the cyst.

With the support of the medical team and the availability of specialized technologies and equipment, the hydatid cyst was completely removed, along with the damaged tissue and the complex adhesions.

The child is now recovering gradually in the hospital ward and is expected to return to his family in good health.
