Using Endoscopy to Remove Spinal Disc Herniations for a Young Man

A specialized spine surgery team at Al-Kafeel Super Specialty Hospital successfully removed spinal disc herniations for a 41-year-old patient using advanced endoscopic technology.

Dr. Wael Qassem, a Syrian spine surgeon, explained:

“Through an incision of no more than 8 mm, we are now able to remove herniations, calcifications, and expand the spinal canal using a spinal endoscope. This cutting-edge technique preserves the muscles and soft tissues, which is crucial for maintaining spinal stability and avoids the need for large incisions.”

He added:

“The key advantages of endoscopic surgery include reduced inflammation, minimal blood loss, significantly fewer adhesions, and very mild nerve pain. Patients can often walk on the same day of the procedure, which can be performed under general or local anesthesia.”

Dr. Qassem elaborated on the case:

“The patient, a 41-year-old man, suffered from a herniated disc between the L5 and S1 vertebrae, with a ruptured and extruded disc causing severe lower limb pain due to nerve compression. The procedure was a success, as the herniations were removed while preserving the surrounding tissues and muscles.”
