A specialized endoscopic surgery team at Alkafeel Hospital in Karbala successfully treated a 6-month-old infant suffering from esophageal atresia since birth.
Dr. Faez Sandouk, a Syrian specialist, stated in a press interview that the infant had been referred to the hospital with esophageal atresia, a condition she had endured since birth. He noted that the child had undergone surgery at the age of two months without success.
Dr. Sandouk added, "Several attempts to treat the infant were made in Iraq, Iran, and Syria, but without success due to the severe narrowing. Upon reviewing her condition, we observed a complete esophageal obstruction, and the child was being fed through a small gastrostomy tube directly connected to her stomach."
He highlighted that, with their precise expertise in endoscopy and the availability of specialized tools at Alkafeel Hospital, they were able to perform a unique catheterization procedure using ultra-thin wires to access and dilate the esophageal narrowing. The procedure was successful, and the infant is now able to feed naturally through her mouth.
