Successful Treatment of a Najafi Infant Born Without an Anus and a Congenital Heart Defect

An Iraqi medical team successfully performed a surgical procedure on a newborn girl from Najaf who was born with a congenital intestinal malformation and without an anal opening. The case was particularly challenging due to the presence of additional cardiac complications, making the treatment more complex.

Dr. Sarmad Al-Rubaie, a pediatric surgery specialist at the hospital, stated, "We received a baby girl from Najaf suffering from a congenital intestinal anomaly and the absence of an anal opening. Her condition required multiple surgical interventions to correct the defect and enable her to lead a normal life."

Dr. Al-Rubaie explained that the first procedure performed was a colostomy to create a temporary external opening. Recently, the team successfully completed an anal reconstruction surgery, which lasted approximately two and a half hours. He further noted that the next stage of treatment will involve closing the colostomy, after which the child will be able to function normally.

He also highlighted that the case was particularly complex due to the presence of congenital heart defects, for which the infant had previously undergone multiple cardiac surgeries. "However," Dr. Al-Rubaie emphasized, "our medical team is highly experienced and skilled in performing such complex procedures, and we regularly conduct similar surgeries at our hospital."
