Advanced Medical Expertise Restores Hope to a Patient with an Eye Injury from an Explosion

A specialized medical team at Alkafeel Hospital successfully performed a complex and delicate eye surgery on a 15-year-old adolescent from Salah Al-Din, who suffered a severe eye injury due to an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion.

Dr. Haider Abbas, an ophthalmic surgeon at the hospital, stated that shrapnel from the explosion had caused cataract formation (lens opacity), the presence of foreign bodies in the vitreous body, and vitreous hemorrhage.

"The procedure we performed included a vitrectomy, cataract extraction, intraocular lens implantation, shrapnel removal, and retinal laser photocoagulation," explained Dr. Abbas.

"Instead of using silicone oil, we utilized a medical-grade gas tamponade, eliminating the need for an additional surgery."

Dr. Abbas confirmed that the patient’s vision will gradually improve, highlighting the cutting-edge medical technology available at Alkafeel Hospital, which enabled the surgical team to successfully perform such a challenging procedure.
