A specialized medical team at Alkafeel Hospital successfully
treated a 24-year-old man from Diyala Province who was suffering from a
severe and complex spinal deformity.
Dr. Wael Qasim, a spine surgery specialist at the hospital, stated that
the patient presented with a significant kyphotic deformity combined with
scoliosis and rotation of the lower lumbar vertebrae.
“This condition caused the patient respiratory difficulties, digestive
issues, and limited mobility, in addition to a disfigured physical appearance,”
Dr. Qasim noted. “He had a spinal disjunction of a type that is
difficult to correct using conventional methods. Multiple physicians, both
within and outside Iraq, had declined to manage his case due to its complexity.”
Dr. Qasim explained that the surgical procedure took three hours and was
made possible thanks to the expertise of the medical team and the advanced
medical equipment at Alkafeel Hospital. “We were able to correct 70%
of the spinal curvature, and the operation was successful. The patient was able
to walk the following day,” he said.
He emphasized that such surgeries require highly specialized equipment, which
is available at Alkafeel Hospital, and stressed the importance of such
technology in providing advanced medical care to patients.
