Successful Cochlear Implant Restores Hearing for Child at Alkafeel Hospital

A specialized medical team at Alkafeel Hospital has successfully restored hearing to a two-year-old child through a complex cochlear implant procedure, following a diagnosis of profound hearing loss.

Dr. Hisham Al-Moussawi, an otolaryngology (ENT) surgeon at the hospital, explained that the child, a resident of Najaf, had previously been evaluated by multiple physicians and was fitted with hearing aids. However, the devices did not result in any meaningful improvement in his auditory function.

"Upon evaluation at Alkafeel’s ENT clinics, advanced diagnostic tests revealed severe sensorineural hearing loss beyond the corrective range of conventional hearing aids. Therefore, a decision was made to proceed with cochlear implantation," said Dr. Al-Moussawi.

He noted that the procedure was particularly challenging due to the presence of a congenital malformation in the child’s inner ear. Nevertheless, the surgical team successfully managed the anatomical complexity and conducted intraoperative auditory testing, which confirmed the success of the implantation.

Dr. Al-Moussawi concluded by advising parents of children with hearing difficulties to consult a specialized physician early, emphasizing that early diagnosis and intervention significantly improve treatment outcomes.
