A specialized spinal surgery team at Alkafeel Hospital in Karbala has successfully performed a corrective spinal procedure on a 3-year-old girl suffering from a congenital spinal deformity.
In a press statement, Dr. Wael Qasim, spinal surgery specialist, explained that the young patient from Basra had suffered from spinal curvature since birth. “The deformity was caused by a congenital malformation in one of the thoracic vertebrae, which included an additional half vertebra,” he noted.
Dr. Qasim emphasized that the optimal age for surgical intervention in such cases is around three to four years, when the patient can benefit most from the corrective results. “We performed a minimally invasive procedure that lasted about one hour, during which the extra half vertebra was removed, and spinal fusion was carried out above and below the affected area to prevent further curvature progression,” he added.
The surgery was conducted using advanced technologies, including intraoperative neuromonitoring to ensure nerve safety. Furthermore, all materials used in the procedure were biocompatible with pediatric patients, eliminating the need for future replacement surgeries.
This achievement reflects Alkafeel Hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality specialized care for pediatric orthopedic and spinal conditions.
