A Challenging Case Due to Risk of Complications – Successful Complex Spinal Surgery for a Woman with a Previous Operation Performed in India

A specialized neurosurgical team at Alkafeel Hospital successfully performed a complex surgery for a female patient suffering from spinal canal stenosis at two levels of the spine, separated by an area where she had undergone a previous operation in India, which had resulted in multiple adhesions and scar tissue. This posed a significant challenge requiring special techniques to prevent complications.

Dr. Hussam Al-Anbari, neurosurgery specialist at the hospital, explained, “One of the challenges we sometimes face in spinal surgery is performing an operation in an area where the patient had previous surgical intervention, due to the presence of adhesions and fibrosis. Such was the case of a 56-year-old woman from Karbala.”

He added, “The patient had previously undergone lumbar spine fixation in India several years ago. Recently, she developed spinal canal stenosis above and below the previously fixed vertebrae. Her condition required decompression of the spinal canal and fixation of the slipped vertebrae with screws, linking the new fixation to the old one.”

Dr. Al-Anbari confirmed, “The surgery was successfully completed using specific medical techniques to overcome the challenges and prevent any complications. The patient’s condition is now excellent and stable, and she was discharged from the hospital a few days after the operation.”
