Neglected Fracture Complicated by Deep Vein Thrombosis Successfully Treated at Alkafeel Hospital
The Orthopedic Surgery and Trauma team at Alkafeel Hospital achieved a remarkable medical success in treating a complex case of an 80-year-old woman who suffered from a peritrochanteric fracture of the left hip. The injury had been left untreated for an entire month due to concerns over anesthesia risks and surgical complications.
Dr. Burair Mohammed Ali Al-Asadi explained that the case was particularly rare and complicated, as the delay worsened the injury and increased the risk of serious complications. However, thanks to the advanced facilities at the hospital, including a skilled anesthesia and nursing team and modern surgical equipment, the operation was successfully performed, restoring the fracture to its proper position despite the prolonged neglect.
He added that the patient did not require admission to the intensive care unit, was able to leave the hospital safely, and even began walking the day after surgery—an outcome that reflects both the proficiency of the medical staff and the advanced techniques utilized at Alkafeel Hospital.
Dr. Al-Asadi further noted that the patient had also been suffering from a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the left leg. The condition was first managed by interventional radiologist Dr. Ali Mohammed Jaleel, who inserted a vena cava filter to prevent pulmonary embolism. Only after stabilizing the vascular condition was the fracture fixation carried out. He emphasized that such cases are extremely rare and technically demanding, usually managed only at highly specialized centers with advanced capabilities.
This achievement reaffirms Alkafeel Hospital’s leading role in providing top-level medical care, combining modern technology and expert teams to save complicated cases and deliver outstanding outcomes for patients.
