Operation to Remove a Tumor from the Mitral Valve and Replace It with a Mechanical Valve

Cardiac Surgeon: Accurate Diagnosis Is the Key to Treating the Disease

A specialized medical team in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at Al-Kafeel Super Speciality Hospital in Karbala revealed the health condition of a 40-year-old female patient from Karbala, who had suffered for more than three years from irregular heartbeats and had been taking blood-thinning medications to prevent clotting, without an accurate diagnosis of the source of the health problems that were gradually worsening.

Dr. Ahmed Jawad Al-Khafaji stated that, following the patient’s visit to a cardiologist at Al-Kafeel Hospital, it became clear that the real cause of her problems was insufficiency of the mitral valve, along with the presence of a tumor within the valve’s fibers, which had led to the deterioration of her health condition over the past years.

Al-Khafaji added that, after diagnosing the condition using an MRI scan, the medical team accurately determined the type and location of the tumor so that the best therapeutic approach could be chosen. Afterwards, a successful surgical operation was performed in which the tumor was completely removed. The damaged valve was then replaced with a mechanical valve to restore normal heart function.

The cardiac surgeon explained that, following the operation, the patient made a full recovery and left the hospital in good health, marking another success that reaffirms the capabilities of the hospital and its medical team in treating complex cases.
