Successful Heart Defect Correction for a 1.5 kg Newborn

A specialized team of thoracic, cardiac, and vascular surgeons at Alkafeel Specialized Hospital in Karbala successfully repaired a congenital heart defect in a newborn weighing just 1.5 kilograms. The achievement was credited to the hospital’s skilled medical team and excellent postoperative care.

Dr. Ahmed Jawad Al-Khafaji stated:

"Our success in pediatric open-heart surgeries is supported by our expertise in neonatal thoracic surgeries, a hallmark of advanced medical centers in this field."

He added:

"The newborn, 23 days old and weighing 1.5 kilograms, underwent the surgery to address a congenital defect. In such cases, we typically operate even on smaller newborns and within days of birth to prevent further complications."

Dr. Al-Khafaji elaborated:

"The defect caused the functional part of the lung and heart to malfunction due to compression from the damaged lung area. The successful surgery restored the infant’s health."

He emphasized the hospital's comprehensive care, including an experienced team of anesthesiologists, surgical assistants, and specialized postoperative intensive care, which enables the hospital to handle such complex procedures confidently.
