Rare Case of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome Successfully Managed at Alkafeel Hospital
A specialized diagnostic and interventional radiology team at Alkafeel Hospital in Karbala has successfully diagnosed and treated an extremely rare congenital condition in a 13-year-old girl presenting with multiple anatomical abnormalities.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Rumahi revealed the details of the rare case, explaining that the patient presented with severe lower abdominal pain coinciding with her menstrual periods. Comprehensive imaging, including contrast-enhanced MRI and CT scans, revealed the presence of two separate uteri, two cervices, and a partially duplicated vagina. The left uterus and its cervix were distended with blood, along with a hematosalpinx in the left fallopian tube, while the right uterus and cervix appeared normal.
Dr. Al-Rumahi added that the abnormalities were not limited to the reproductive system, as the CT scan also showed the congenital absence of the left kidney, leaving the patient with a single functioning right kidney. This constellation of findings corresponds to Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome (HWW) — a very rare congenital condition characterized by combined malformations of the reproductive and urinary systems.
Following the precise diagnosis, the medical team performed a surgical removal of the left uterus and fallopian tube to alleviate symptoms and improve the patient’s overall condition.
Dr. Al-Rumahi emphasized the importance of early and accurate diagnosis in such cases and highlighted Alkafeel Hospital’s capability to manage complex and rare medical conditions, thanks to its advanced diagnostic technologies and highly skilled medical teams.
