Surgeons Save a Young Man's Lung by Separating It from Severe Wall Fibrosis

A specialized cardiothoracic and vascular surgery team at Al-Kafeel Super Speciality Hospital announced the success of a complex surgical procedure that lasted for more than five hours, during which they saved a young male patient's lung from complete fibrosis that almost permanently impaired its function.

Dr. Ahmed Jawad Al-Khafaji stated that a 39-year-old man from Babylon Governorate had been involved in an accident over two months ago, resulting in a large hematoma (hemothorax) in the pleural lining. He explained that as a conventional first-aid measure at another hospital, part of this blood collection was drained using a chest tube. However, this procedure was insufficient, leading to the retention of coagulated blood clots in the chest cavity, which over time caused what is known as "pleural fibrosis" (fibrothorax).

Dr. Jawad pointed out that the patient had spent a prolonged period in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being transferred to Al-Kafeel Super Speciality Hospital, where he was immediately prepared for surgery due to the critical nature of his condition.

He continued, noting that the fibrosis of the pleural lining was complete. The real danger lay in the fact that this fibrosis obliterated the distinction between the chest wall and the lung wall due to the formation of abnormal tissues, making the separation process highly delicate and high-risk.

The specialist confirmed that during the continuous five-hour surgery, the lung was successfully freed. He explained that the fibrotic lining was meticulously dissected from the lung, fully releasing it from the adhesions without the need to resect any part of it. This was the most crucial objective to ensure full respiratory function for the patient.

Dr. Ahmed Jawad concluded his statement by emphasizing that the outcome was highly satisfactory. The patient regained his health post-operation and has begun a rapid recovery, putting an end to his prolonged suffering that started at the time of the accident.
