Successful Removal of a Tumor from the Mitral Valve and Replacement with a Mechanical Valve

Cardiac Surgeon: Accurate Diagnosis Is the Key to Proper Treatment
A specialized team in cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery at Alkafeel Hospital in Karbala has successfully treated a 40-year-old female patient from Karbala who had suffered for more than three years from irregular heartbeat and was on anticoagulant medication to prevent blood clots — without a clear diagnosis of the underlying cause of her worsening condition.
Dr. Ahmed Jawad Al-Khafaji explained that after the patient was examined by a cardiologist at Alkafeel Hospital, it was determined that the true cause of her condition was insufficiency of the Mitral valve due to the presence of a tumor within the valve’s fibrous tissue, which had progressively deteriorated her cardiac function over the years.
He added that, following an accurate diagnosis through cardiac MRI, the medical team was able to precisely locate and identify the tumor, enabling them to select the most suitable treatment approach. The patient then underwent a successful open-heart surgery, during which the tumor was completely removed and the damaged valve replaced with a mechanical one, restoring normal heart function.
Dr. Al-Khafaji affirmed that the patient made a full recovery after surgery and was discharged in good health, marking another success that reflects the advanced diagnostic capabilities and surgical expertise available at Alkafeel Hospital.
