Successful Fixation of a Complex Ankle Fracture in a Patient with Chronic Heart Failure

Medical Team Overcomes Cardiac Challenges to Restore Mobility
A specialized orthopedic and trauma surgery team at Alkafeel Hospital in Karbala successfully performed a complex surgical fixation for a 55-year-old female patient from Karbala who suffered a comminuted, compound fracture of the ankle joint. The patient also had a medical history of chronic heart failure, which posed additional challenges to the surgical procedure.
Dr. Hussam Ajami explained that the case required exceptional caution due to the combination of severe fracture complexity and the patient’s chronic cardiac condition. To ensure safety and optimal outcomes, the operation was performed under regional anesthesia — a safer alternative for patients with cardiac insufficiency. The fractures were stabilized using a locking plate system, a modern fixation technique that provides excellent stability and promotes faster bone healing.
Dr. Ajami confirmed that the surgery was successful and that the patient was discharged from the hospital in good health following a stable recovery.
