Al-Hashimi: Mammograms Are Critical for Women with a Family History

As part of the activities for Pink October and in efforts to enhance health awareness within academic institutions, Alkafeel Hospital organized two awareness lectures at Al-Ameed University and Al-Siddiqa Al-Tahira Center, affiliated with the Al-Abbas Holy Shrine. The lectures focused on breast cancer and the importance of early detection. The sessions were delivered by Dr. Anwar Al-Hashimi, a specialist in early detection of breast diseases and cancer at the hospital. The lectures targeted female students and staff at both institutions, aiming to provide them with accurate knowledge and enable them to spread health awareness within their communities. Dr. Al-Hashimi presented detailed information about the nature of the disease, early symptoms, and advanced diagnostic techniques, with a focus on the most vulnerable age groups and the most effective preventive measures. She emphasized the importance of adopting a preventive lifestyle that starts at home, noting that regular self-examination is the first and essential step in detecting any abnormal changes. She further highlighted that the key to successful treatment lies in moving from self-examination to specialized medical screening. “The mammogram is the most effective screening tool, especially for women over the age of forty,” Dr. Al-Hashimi stated. She added that mammography becomes critical and indispensable for women with a first-degree family history (mother, sister, maternal aunt) of breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer. Dr. Al-Hashimi concluded by affirming the vital role of mammography in detecting the disease at very early stages, significantly increasing recovery rates and drastically reducing the incidence of advanced cases. She emphasized that this is the ultimate goal of the awareness initiatives organized by Alkafeel Hospital in support of educational and community institutions
