A medical team specializing in thoracic and vascular surgery at Al-Kafeel Specialized Hospital in Karbala successfully performed a complex and specialized surgical procedure on a patient suffering from chronic kidney failure who was undergoing regular dialysis sessions, after his health deteriorated following a previous failed surgery performed in a neighboring country.

Dr. Ahmed Jawad Al-Khafaji stated, “A patient came to us suffering from kidney failure, severe pulmonary cavitation, and the onset of sepsis, following a complex surgical procedure,” explaining that “the patient had previously traveled to a neighboring country believing he would receive better medical care given the complexity of his condition, but the surgery was not performed properly, which exacerbated the severity of his condition.”

Al-Khafaji noted that “patients with chronic kidney failure who are on dialysis are prone to severe lung infections that may progress to (pulmonary cavitation), a condition that causes cavities to form as a result of damage to parts of the lung, creating a fertile environment for the proliferation of complex bacteria. This necessitated immediate surgical intervention to remove the damaged sections and clear the lung, especially after signs emerged confirming that the patient was suffering from the onset of bacterial sepsis.”

The thoracic and vascular surgeon added, “We successfully removed the damaged portions of the lung in their entirety,” confirming that “the patient’s current condition is very stable.”

Al-Khafaji attributed this success to the availability of all the necessary modern technologies and medical specialties at Al-Kafeel Hospital, which eliminated the need for the patient to travel to distant and scattered locations to receive treatment.
