The Nuclear Medicine Center at Al-Kafeel Specialized Hospital in Karbala announced that it has made significant strides in the early and accurate diagnosis of functional disorders in the body, confirming that it has possessed an integrated system that meets the latest international standards in this sensitive medical field since the hospital’s founding.

Dr. Ahmed Kanaan, director of the center and a specialist in nuclear medicine and thyroid disorders, stated that the “gamma camera” available at the center is the cornerstone of comprehensive functional examinations of the body, from head to toe, noting that the revolutionary feature of this device lies in its ability to detect functional changes and disorders in the body’s cells before they manifest as tangible anatomical abnormalities detectable by conventional X-rays, CT scans, or MRI.

Kanaan added that the device accurately examines glandular interactions, cases of hyperactivity or hypoactivity, and diagnoses “suspicious” or “inflamed” nodules. It also assists surgeons in pinpointing the exact location of the parathyroid gland with extreme precision should the condition require removal, and it covers comprehensive examinations of lung, heart, stomach, and intestines, noting that a comprehensive bone scan is one of the advanced specialized tests the device offers for the early detection of tumors and bone infections, and provides an accurate diagnosis of ureteral obstructions, with the unique feature of calculating and determining the exact percentage of function and efficiency of each kidney (right and left) separately, in addition to examining the cerebral cortex.

The center’s director noted that Al-Kafeel Hospital is one of the few centers in Iraq that routinely conducts advanced, high-quality examinations on a weekly basis, most notably axillary exploration for breast diseases and cancers. He emphasized that female patients can now undergo high-precision axillary exploration prior to breast-lifting surgeries, providing the surgical team with a clear roadmap that ensures patient safety and higher success rates for the procedure.

Dr. Ahmed Kanaan concluded his remarks by identifying three key pillars that set the Nuclear Medicine Center at Al-Kafeel Hospital apart and make it a leader in its field, namely: the center’s design, which is equipped with the highest standards of radiation protection and safety to safeguard both patients and medical staff; the center’s possession of the most advanced and state-of-the-art generation of nuclear medicine equipment available globally; and the fact that all medical reports and test results issued by the center are subject to Al-Kafeel Hospital’s rigorous quality control system, which complies with international accreditation standards.
